The 2025 civics test
USCIS gives the 2025 civics test to applicants who filed Form N-400 on or after Oct. 20, 2025. If you filed earlier, you take the 2008 test.
How it works
- It is an oral test.
- The officer asks up to 20 questions from an official list of 128.
- You need 12 correct answers to pass. Nine incorrect answers is a fail.
- The officer stops at 12 correct or 9 incorrect.
65/20 special consideration
If you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20 years or more, you study only 20 starred questions. The officer asks 10 and you need 6 correct. You may also take the civics test in the language of your choice.
Besides civics
There is also an English test (reading, writing and speaking), unless an exception for age, years of residence or disability (Form N-648) applies.
How to study
USCIS publishes the 128 questions, a study guide and flash cards for free. Some answers change after elections, so check the test-updates page before your interview.
